“Is it possible to edit AG-HPX500 P2 .MXF files using Sony Vegas (Movie Studio Platinum 12)? Will the .MXF files first need to be converted to some other format, or can Movie Studio Platinum 12 edit without conversion?  If a conversion is needed,  is there software convert the P2 files to a suitable format?  Is it possible to simply change the .MFX file name extension to .mpg and then import into Platinum?  I am considering getting a Panasonic P2, but cannot find a clear answer to this question re P2 MXF and Movie Studio Platinum 12. Re: Edit Panasonic P2 MXF in Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12

Summary: This article will show the best way to convert Canon MTS to ProRes 422, so that you can import Canon .MTS files into Final Cut Pro 6/7 or FCP X for smooth editing work.

Canon High Definition Camcorders- XA10, XA20, XA25 and Vixia camcorders- HF R400, HF G30, HF G20, etc are all the best choices for videographers to capture. The point here, you will find it a painful experience to import and edit Canon AVCHD .MTS with Final Cut Pro software. There’re some frequently asked questions quoted as below.

Q1: Converting Canon XA10 mts Files to FCP Issues

I have a ton of footage a client brought in that was shot on a Canon XA10 HD camcorder. They are .MTS files. I don't see any timecode on them. I need to get them into FCP to edit with. I found a video convert app and downloaded it, but it only gets them to H.264 and FCP didn’t support the output video still.

Q2: Importing Canon MTS files to Final Cut Pro

I have picked up a job editing together a couple of short interviews. The files were shot on a Canon Vixia HF R40 and are AVCHD. I have previously been unable to Import the files into FCP 7 so have ended up using Sony Vegas. Is there an easy way of doing this in FCP 7, I really want to do this project in FCP rather than Vegas.

As you know Canon Vixia, Legria, High Definition series camcorders record AVCHD MTS videos, but it seems Final Cut Pro (including the recent FCP X) does not like the way. The file type is a compressed output format, but not ideal for editing in NLE system. To solve those problems, the quick workaround is to transcode MTS files to Final Cut Pro natively supported formats (Apple ProRes is highly recommended). Along with some help from third-party software, it can be done effortlessly. Here I share a simple guide on how to convert Canon .mts files for FCP editing smoothly.
