Playing Blu-rays in Mac and Windows 8 with VLC Media Player

Check out this short tutorial to learn how to Rip encrypted Blu-ray discs onto VLC Media Player for uploading.

The Free VLC Media Player

If someone gave me the choice of picking just one media player to take to a deserted island, I would most definitely plonk for VideoLan’s VLC Media Player. I really don’t know whether I would get too much of a chance to watch anything while I am marooned there, but when it comes to versatility, no other player comes close. Thank God! VLC Media Player is free. It is Open Source and cross-platform too, also available for Android phones.

In order to use VLC to watch YouTube videos, all you need is the video URL without all the junk appended at the end (, for example). Now open VLC, and go to Media –> Open Network Stream, paste the URL and click Play. Your video should start playing in VLC.

Make sure your URL is http and not https, otherwise this trick will not work.

But...VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. While, no-one seems to know much how to import and play Blu-ray discs using VLC (even you've gotten rid of the copy protection and can actually make a backup!). So here's how we have done it.

First and easiest, upgrade VLC Media Player to recent version

As far as we know, since the VLC Media Player 2.0.1 released, it's with improved Blu-ray discs playback. It comes with multiple fixes for Bluray discs playback with VLC.

Second solution: You'll need two files: keys database and AACS dynamic library.

Keys database: get the file
Windows: put it in %APPDATA%/aacs/ . How to find where %appdata% dir is?
Mac OS: put it in ~/.config/aacs/
Linux: put it in ~/.config/aacs/

AACS dynamic library
Windows 32bit: put that file in your VLC directory
Mac OS: right-click on VLC, choose "Show package contents" and put that file in Contents/MacOS/lib directory
Linux 32bit: put that file in VLC folder (or in LD_LIBRARY_PATH, usually /usr/lib/)
Linux 64bit: put that file in VLC folder (or in LD_LIBRARY_PATH, usually /usr/lib64/)

Alternative choice: Rip and Convert Blu-ray to a VLC playable video

If you have not decided to upgrade your VLC, or the second choice seems to be a bit complex for you, there's an easy way to make it.
